Both girls and boys need sponsorship. Very few families can afford school but they value education and come to SMD, Tara Abbey and SMD Branch School for Young Monks hoping to enroll their children and to find financial assistance. Sponsorship will provide that assistance.

Students at Shree Mangal Dvip Boarding School (SMD)

Boarding $1185 CAD/year
Day  $530 CAD/year

April 2016 - Shirley Blair, SMD Director, says:

Sponsorship rates are set at the start of each school year. Our operating costs come out of sponsorship. It is always a struggle to meet expenses, especially after the earthquakes.

Costs rose 36% in the first seven months of 2016. To provide a cushion from economic shocks, we double-sponsor as many children as possible. As we start school this April 2016, 75 children are without sponsors.

We lost 30% of our buildings in the earthquake. We cannot access the big hall (shrine hall), dining hall, Library, Computer Lab, Science Lab, many classrooms and offices. Two classes are in the garage, and the academic office is on top of the generator. Many other classes are outside in temporary shelters, classes only separated by tarps.

Monks at Thrangu Tashi Choling (TTC) and SMDBS

In addition to the main monastery in Boudhanath, Nepal, Thrangu Rinpoche has the monastery at Namo Buddha, the three year retreat near Bhaktapur, and Vajra Vidya Institute in Sarnath, India. The monks are mobile between locations depending on their tasks and yearly schedule. At the Shedra (monastic college) monks study part of the year in India and Nepal. At the Namo Buddha location, Shree Mangal Dvip Branch School educates the young, grade-school-aged monks. (SMDBS)

There are three categories of sponsorship for monks:

Basic $300 CAD/year
SMD Branch School $600 CAD/year
Shedra Monk $750 CAD/year

Nuns at Thrangu Tara Abbey (TA)

While most of Thrangu Rinpoche's nuns live at Tara Abbey in Swyambunath, Nepal, some are in the traditional three year retreat in Manang, (Sher Gompa) in the Annapurna Range west of Kathmandu at 3400 metres. Others are studying in various places in India or living and teaching at centers abroad. Funds are pooled to provide for all nuns equally and the nuns are eager to correspond with their sponsors.

Basic $300 CAD/ year
Nun at SMD $600 CAD/ year

Partial sponsorship

If a full sponsorship is not within your budget, you may choose to do a partial sponsorship. We will match your chosen contribution with the partial payments of others until we cover the full amount.

Or you may decide with other friends or family to share a full sponsorship.
